TELMA RUSSO – UNCONSCIOUS & FASHIONABLE TALENT

By Sofia Torre

It’s the same energy that you feel in her photos that you recognize in her path: after completing her education as both stylist (Magestil) and photographer (ETIC*) Telma Russo wouldn’t wait; she would fight! The best way to do it? Knocking on every door that could open and never stop working. As a result she started an internship with Mário Principe and got her first original works ready for the public eye.

When still a student at ETIC Telma did her first Fashion Production, proving her resourcefulness by building the sets, contacting the hairstylist Jojo Yeah and the model, approaching the stores to get the clothes and getting both material and space to shoot herself. Through this “no pain, no gain” politics Telma Russo had taken her first step as Fashion and Conceptual Photographer.

After completing her education at ETIC, Telma pursued her passion for fashion through photography by doing a number of editorials that always stand out for their strength and willingness to try different things. From strong colors to black and white or from intricate full of information images to simple raw photos Telma Russo never ceases to amaze us with her ability to rethink her message through her work. By not being afraid of changing, by searching new ways of understanding things and directing our eyes, Telma Russo was able from a very early stage in her career to blend fashion and art with originality, class, professionalism and innovation.

At the same time that her first fashion works got to the public through online magazines like Draft, Telma looked inside for new inspiration. It was in her experiences and deep inside herself that she found the themes that came alive through both digital and conceptual work.

In such works one can notice Telma’s observation of what is human, the rawness of expressions and sexuality. But what can one really say about the artist’s perspective? After all, art is not to be intellectualized but appreciated. Meaning is always variable according to the eye of the beholder.

Meanwhile, and between doing books, editorials, composites, catalogs and publicity, Telma had the opportunity to take a Photography Specialization in Fashion at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design, where she did “London Call”.

Through her work and persistence Telma Russo ended up working with several well established Portuguese photographers like Mário Principe, Sérgio Santos, João Portugal, João Bacelar, João Carlos or Luís Eça.

It was as the assistant of João Bacelar that Telma Russo started photographing in ModaLisboa. After a couple of experiences where Telma Russo showed versatility and new approaches to the event, her work got noticed and she started being invited as a photographer.

Having her work printed in magazines such as H Magazine or being interviewed by Fashion Heroines is a reason to be proud but just the beginning. Even if the next projects are, as the Portuguese say “in the secret of the Gods”, one can see that Telma Russo is ready to expand her horizons by watching this video, edited and directed by her (soundtrack by Abby Lee Tee).
