Is Donald Trump a Marketing Genius?
Whether you love him or hate him the truth is that during his campaign and after Donald Trump uses the best marketing strategies. That’s one of the main reasons for his victory.
While running for the White House the specific audience he was aiming to hit were carefully views. Engage younger voters getting to the new media channels was an important part of the strategy too. Getting social was also a major move. Not just social media but also alternate media outlets and market research focus groups to find the easiest way to build relationships. Of course that having a simple and clear message “Make American Great Again” also helped. Marketing is also all about repeating the main messages like “Build the Wall’, “Drain the Swamp”, “Law and Order President” and “Bad Deals”. On top of all this he had a speed to market that was huge. Competition was always one step behind trying to respond.
Winning the elections is almost the same as winning products sales and clients: have influence, give a simple message, repeat the message so it sticks, stay up-to-date and have a great relationship management.
Past president winners were also political marketing pioneers. Abraham Lincoln was the first presidential candidate to print and distribute his campaign portrait all over the country while Bill Clinton was the first one to appear on MTV to promote for a younger audience.
After winning the presidency marketing didn’t stop. In fact it probably even got bigger. The speed to market continues as decisions are made and showed with a total communication control. His Twitter is still used to promote whatever message he wants. Possible controversial proposals are sent to press so they won’t stop making news about it. This is giving Donald Trump the market research data about possible best and worst decisions to make. Everyone from the media to the public is being used as part of this study but none is getting paid for it – is this a marketing genius or what?
