Bob Marley and Doo-wop Rare Tapes

Epic-Bob-Marley-Quote

“Only once in your life, I truly believe, you find someone who can completely turn your world around. You tell them things that you’ve never shared with another soul and they absorb everything you say and actually want to hear more. You share hopes for the future, dreams that will never come true, goals that were never achieved and the many disappointments life has thrown at you. When something wonderful happens, you can’t wait to tell them about it, knowing they will share in your excitement. They are not embarrassed to cry with you when you are hurting or laugh with you when you make a fool of yourself. Never do they hurt your feelings or make you feel like you are not good enough, but rather they build you up and show you the things about yourself that make you special and even beautiful. There is never any pressure, jealousy or competition but only a quiet calmness when they are around. You can be yourself and not worry about what they will think of you because they love you for who you are. The things that seem insignificant to most people such as a note, song or walk become invaluable treasures kept safe in your heart to cherish forever. Memories of your childhood come back and are so clear and vivid it’s like being young again. Colours seem brighter and more brilliant. Laughter seems part of daily life where before it was infrequent or didn’t exist at all. A phone call or two during the day helps to get you through a long day’s work and always brings a smile to your face. In their presence, there’s no need for continuous conversation, but you find you’re quite content in just having them nearby. Things that never interested you before become fascinating because you know they are important to this person who is so special to you. You think of this person on every occasion and in everything you do. Simple things bring them to mind like a pale blue sky, gentle wind or even a storm cloud on the horizon. You open your heart knowing that there’s a chance it may be broken one day and in opening your heart, you experience a love and joy that you never dreamed possible. You find that being vulnerable is the only way to allow your heart to feel true pleasure that’s so real it scares you. You find strength in knowing you have a true friend and possibly a soul mate who will remain loyal to the end. Life seems completely different, exciting and worthwhile. Your only hope and security is in knowing that they are a part of your life.”

Bob Marley (February 6, 1945 – May 11, 1981), born Nesta Robert Marley which was later to be changed by passport officials to Robert Nesta Marley, was a Jamaican , guitarist, and activist. He was the most widely known writer and performer of , and more specifically . He is famous for popularising the genre outside of Jamaica and the Caribbean. Much of his music dealt with the struggles of the spiritually wealthy rasta and/or spiritually powerful Jah Rastafari.

Bob Marley was a member of this Rastafari movement, whose culture was a key element in the development of reggae. Bob Marley became the leading proponent of the Rastafari, taking their music out of socially deprived areas of Jamaica and onto the international music scene.

Now considered a “Rasta” prophet, Marley’s adoption of the characteristic Rastafarian dreadlocks and famous use of marijuana as a sacred sacrament in the late sixties were an integral part of his persona. He is said to have entered every performance proclaiming the divinity of Jah Rastafari.

A few months before his death, Marley was baptised into the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and took the name Berhane Selassie (meaning the Light of the Holy Trinity in Amharic).

His best known crossover songs are a mixture of reggae, rock, and rhythm and blues, which include “I Shot the Sheriff”, “No Woman No Cry”, “Exodus”, “Could You Be Loved”, “Jamming”, and “Redemption Song”. His posthumous album Legend (1984) became the best-selling reggae album ever, with sales of more than 12 million copies.

Marley tragically died of cancer at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Miami, Florida on May 11, 1981.

In 1993, Marley was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Time magazine chose Bob Marley & The Wailers’ album Exodus as the greatest album of the 20th century.

Religion:

Bob Marley was a member of the Rastafari movement, (not rastafaranism as that is seen as a derogortory term as Rasta’s don’t like being refered to as an ism) whose culture was a key element in the development of reggae music in Jamaica. Rastas belive they are outcast from their native Zion and looked on Ethiopia as their real home and Tafarai Makonnen, who took the title Haile Sellasie I(Power of the Holy Trinity in Amharic), after he became the emperor of Ethiopia, as their leader. Rastas belive H.I.M. is Jesus in flesh. Rastas are considered to be black Jews. Rastas claim their root from King Solomon and Abbysinian queen of Sheba, through lineage of their son Menelik, emperor of Abbysinia. H.I.M. is said to be a direct decendant of Menelik. ‘Ras’ means Head and ‘Tafarai” means Creator. ‘Jah’ is the shortened form of the Hebrew word Jehovah. Rastas belive in one truth and that is the truth of His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Haile Sellasie I, King of kings, Lord of lords, conquering Lion of the tribe of Judah, two hundred and twenty-fifth ruler of the three thousand year old Ethiopian empire, elect of Jah, Light of the world. Jah Rastafari live out.Rastas preach a non-materialistic, egalitarian way of life. Bob Marley became a leading proponent of the Rastafari, taking their music out of the socially deprived areas of Jamaica and onto the international music scene. Bob Marley was baptized by the Archbishop of the Ethiopian Orthodox Christian Church in Kingston, Jamaica on November 4, 1980. Marley’s diet was ital; fruit, vegetables and fish; which is food approved by the Rastafari movement.

Bob Marley had 13 children: three with his wife Rita, two adopted from Rita’s previous relationships, and the remaining eight with separate women.[19] His children are, in order of birth:

Bob Marley and Doo-wop Rare Tapes

According to an article in The New York Times, Marley experimented on the tape with different sounds, adopting a doo-wop style on “Stay With Me” and “the slow love song style of 1960′s artists” on “Splish for My Splash”.

What is strange, especially for those accustomed to his reggae, is the style in which Marley sings. On one track, ”Stay With Me,” Marley sings in an almost doo-wop style; on another ”Splish for My Splash,” he appropriates the slow love song style of 1960′s artists like Sam Cooke.

Sometime in the spring of 1968, a lanky, clean-cut 23-year-old Jamaican arrived at an apartment on Valentine Avenue in the Bronx with a guitar and a future no one could have possibly imagined.

He was Bob Marley, who eventually sold tens of millions of albums and built reggae into an international musical movement but who at this point was dead set on learning the mysteries of rhythm and blues. To that end he had gone to the Bronx to sit at the heels of Jimmy Norman, then a 31-year-old composer and crooner who had written dozens of hit songs for the singer and producer Johnny Nash. Mr. Nash had just signed Marley to his record label, JAD Records.

”He was just a nice young guy who loved music,” Mr. Norman recalled. ”He loved the Impressions, and he loved James Brown.”

The two men, along with Marley’s wife, Rita, and Mr. Norman’s writing partner, Al Pyfrom, jammed for the next three days. Then Mr. Norman set up a tape recorder and recorded 24 minutes of music onto a cassette that soon disappeared.

It was not played again for 34 years, during which time Marley become a global superstar and died of cancer at 36 in 1981. Forgotten by Mr. Norman, the tape remained in a box of cassettes in his apartment on the Upper West Side until it was discovered last June by a volunteer from the Jazz Foundation of America who was cleaning the place. By JESSE McKINLEY for The New York Times

Billboard 2012 in Review – Who sold more and who was more popular?

Billboard 2012 in Review – Who sold more and who was more popular?

2012-year-in-music

It’s not exactly 2012 as the year end chart counts sales and airplay from 01 December to 30 November. In the case of 2012 Year End Chart data is from December 2011 to the end of November 2012. Sales and airplay December 2012 will be part of next year chart. This way Billboard can publish the Year End Chart on the Year End edition.

This is another year where woman are very important. Adele, Rihanna and Madonna are heavily featured in some of the most important categories. The new music sensation Gotye (though he already have 4 albums released) also had big importance on 2012 Year End Charts.

TOP ARTISTS

This chart compiles Artists that performed better on the albums and singles charts, including sales and radio airplay. Adele breaks a record of being #01 for two consecutive years as she was also #01 for 2011. Madonna and Gotye were only #23 and #24 on this chart but were considered top by Billboard due to other important charts they topped.

Despite having two albums fresh during the period Rihanna only managed to get #16 on this chart showing another year that she is more a singles/songs act.

So Rihanna did have lots of Hits during 2012 and that pay off as she did achieve the TOP of the Artist Songs Chart of 2012. Yet Gotye had the #01 song of the year only managed to be the #14 artist on this chart.

HOT 100 Digital Songs Sales 2012

So the songs that sold better during 2012 (and it’s all about sales numbers here on this chart) were not that different from the Hot 100. In fact the TOP 4 is exactly the same also with Gotye at #01 too. Check it out:

HOT 100 Digital Songs Artists 2012

So the artists that sold more were not exactly the same played most at radio. Again we see that Radio is still very alive and making some stars shine bright. One example is Rihanna that was only #06 on single sales and #01 at Radio Plays – yet when Billboard mixed it up she became the #01 songs artist. This comes to show that Rihanna had a lot more airplay than any other artist. Enough to compensate the lack of sales compared to the other 5 artist ahead of her. No surprises this year as Adele is #01… again! This time around the song “Skyfall” from the latest James Bond franchise movie OST helped her achieving the #01spot. As the theme it is not available in any Adele album most of her fans decided to buy the digital single and not the complete OST Adele only sings one song.

Radio Airplay 2012

So the airplay song #01 is also the Hot 100 #01 song. Surprising is the #02 song from Rihanna that is not even TOP 10 on the year end sales. Rihanna is one of those stars that get bigger especially due to radio plays as both singles and album sales are not that good compared to all other artists. On 2012 year end charts one can get that once again (just like in 2011 year end charts).

TOP Electronic/Dance Albums 2012

LMAFO have got to an end but before going they can be proud to get the 2012 Electronic/Dance album of the year. Despite being less successful than expected by the industry MDNA by Madonna managed to be the second best selling dance album of the year – hardly a flop album like the media tried to call it. Lady Gaga and David Guetta were able to get their 2011 releases inside the TOP 5 Best Sellings of 2012 which is a great achievement. Here is the Top 10:

#10 “4X4=12” – Deadmau5

TOP Electronic/Dance Albums Artists 2012

So the best selling Electronic/Dance Artists from 2012 are not very different from the ones on the Electronic/Dance Albums Chart. Skrillex got to EPs on the chart making him change place with Madonna at #02. This is the only artist with EPs on the chart that are usually half th-e price as LPs but Billboard take into account their sales the same way. Deadmau5 jumps to #07 due to other albums besides “4X4=12” selling equally well during 2012.

Club Play Dance Songs 2012

Only Rihanna and Nicki Minaj are the only artist that feature on the TOP 10 of both Club Play Dance Songs and Artist. Thought the #01 Dance Song belongs to Zedd. Another artist worth mention is Madonna that scored three #01 Club Play Dance Songs but all her songs missed the Top 10 of year yet all made it inside the TOP 50 Club Play Songs. This helped giving her a Top 5 position on the Club Play Dance Artists 2012 but the fact that a lot of her older 80’s and 90’s Hits were played a lot during 2012 was also helpful.

#08 “Blow Me (Last Kiss) – P!nk

#09 “Dark Side” – Kelly Clarkson

#10 “R.I.P.” – Rita Ore featuring Tinie Tempah

Club Play Dance Artists 2012

This chart usually shows artists that scored the biggest dance pop hits of the year on Hot 100 and DJs. One of the exceptions is Madonna. She is nowhere to be found on the TOP 100 artists or Top 100 songs of 2012 yet she scored three #01 songs on the Club Charts during 2012 with all the three singles she released extending her record as the artist with more #01’s on this chart to an impressive 43 songs that peaked at #01. Janet Jackson follows as second all time #01 dance hits with “only” 19 #01 dance hits but Katy Perry and Rihanna are dominating the dance charts for these years getting to #01 with most of their releases and will eventually pass Janet Jackson soon. This year Katy Perry got the #01 position and Rihanna the #02 position on Top Dance Club Plays Artists.

MOST GROSSING TOURS 2012

Today where artists make their money is on tour. Despite being the world best selling artist for 2012 Adele (and she sold more than the double what any other artist did) was only able to sell around 50 million dollars in records. Well there are at least 8 artist that sold more in tickets for concerts alone. Madonna was able to be confortably #01 doing more than 228 million dollars in ticket sales from her 72 sell out concerts. Her “MDNA Tour” became the 10th best selling concert tour of all time. Nothing impressive since her previous tour from 2008/2009 is the best selling tour for a solo artist (male or female) and the 4rd best selling of all time. But It seems that for artist on the scene for more than 30 year live shows are paying off. Their public is more adult and so probably is able to pay higher ticket prices. Bruce Springsteen and Roger Waters come in at #02 and #03 on this chart with 199 million dollars and 186 million dollars. Also of notice is Barbra Streisend that with only 12 concerts managed to be #12 and sold more than 40 million dollars in tickets. Here are the TOP 25 Concert Acts of the year according to Billboard.

Why David Bowie Will never Die

Why David Bowie Will never die

There are not many artists that can afford to be themselves  in a mystical silence these days. Or ever. Most succumb as they pretend to be the latest fashion, falling under the rules of marketing and making it all about profit and numbers. There is nothing wrong in looking for profit but there is a huge compromise in that. When an artist exclusive intention is to reinvent himself according to the flavor of the moment or surviving with stunts (to be the moment bubble gum)  just to feel relevant some is gone or had never been there.

The balance between what an artist His and the market wants is the ball of fire that extinguish the “fake art” for “true art”. For the matter let’s define as fake art all bubble gum artsy marketing procedures to dissimulate lack of talent- at the expense of the best money can buy ( yes, talent of others for the effect).

As for true art let’s just put it plain and simple( avoiding 1000000  pages of discussion)  is the one that sets the trends! The kind of art as relevant today as the day it appeared. . .Timeless and effortless. Sometimes artwork even more important now than in the day it was done. Great minds and talents are always missed from what they actually are and not for what others in a specific moment expected from them. Why ? Maybe because one of the mechanics of desire is the unconscious mind.  And if you play with it you can give the impression that you actually need something even when what you actually miss is a sense of what once was. And sometimes even that is not necessarily pleasant. It’s like Proust’s madeleine. In In Search of Lost Time (also known as Remembrance of Things Past), author Marcel Proust uses madeleines to contrast involuntary memory with voluntary memory. The latter designates memories retrieved by “intelligence,” that is, memories produced by putting conscious effort into remembering events, people, and places. Proust’s narrator laments that such memories are inevitably partial, and do not bear the “essence” of the past.

When we think of Bowie, we know for a fact he is the one who bend all the rules by simply saying: I am a product of myself, therefore I am Bowie.  And in between he created Ziggy Stardust, the narcissistic artist that had to die with is ego soon after being more famous than David Bowie. And Mr. Bowie kept moving on with the same mystic of something long gone and forever missed. That’s how it all started. Making love with his ego we couldn’t expect more than the one who actually don’t pretend to be more than himself.

On that craziness for being relevant in the media Bowie, again in the 90′s decided to do it his way again and became the first artist to be in the stock market. As he became more and more the shadow of his former self he made it clear that once he was he will always be. And detached himself from the ever so inflatable runners looking to forever be “the next new thing”.

Bowie knows perfectly well how marketing is a deadly machine of fake art and runs numbers on empty, so he protected his career all this years with the dignity of a king who respect their servants and never conceiving on explore what he once was in order to be relevant. Has in all,  there will ever be artists that set the example and fake art that makes the numbers.  When both come together simultaneously few, very few artists could endure and a lot perished.

Ziggy2

Of course Bowie  fully understood the concept of being the “chameleon” as the press use to call him. But for a man that insisted on being himself more than anyone else it’s remarkable to notice how we have all changed and still miss Mr. Bowie for what he is.

As the world rejoiced at the return of David Bowie last week, the man himself chose to spend his 66th birthday at The Cloisters museum and gardens in New York. Wandering around the medieval treasures in northern Manhattan, it was a typical move for someone with nothing left to prove who wanted to let his lyrics and video speak for him.

“David spent the day off the grid,” Tony Oursler, who directed Where Are We Now? told The Independent on Sunday. “He emailed me at the end of the day to see how things were going and I replied asking ‘where are we now?’ and he told me. That’s David.”

The video went to number one in iTunes charts in 17 countries and has already been seen by more than three million people on YouTube, Littered with references to Bowie’s past and shot at Oursler’s studio in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, the video would not look out of place at the Turner Prize, which is no surprise given the creative engines behind it. PAUL GALLAGHER for The Independent

Google Doodle: Robert Moog (5 Tips out of 5- Awesome)

Moog Google Doodle

Robert Moog’s 78 Birthday

23 May 2012

“Google’s commemorative Doodles have become increasingly complex as the company grows, and a new one celebrating what would have been the 78th birthday of electronic music pioneer Robert Moog is one of the best yet. The doodle, which has already gone live in some places, is a recreation of the Moog synthesizer that visitors can actually play. Like the Les Paul Doodle, you can record your songs, but Google’s added a couple of sharing tools, so you can post music directly to Plus or send a link. There’s also a full set of knobs for adjusting the waveform, volume, and just about everything else you’d find on a real Moog.” Adi Robertson for Verve.com

Although musical synthesisers already existed, Moog transformed pop music during the 1960s by producing and marketing a small keyboard synth which could be used with relative ease.

Bands including the Beatles and the Doors used the Moog synthesiser, while others later became fans of the Minimoog, a stripped-down version which followed it in the 1970s.

The New Yorker, who would have turned 78 on Wednesday, had been encouraged to dabble in electronics from an early age by his father and built his first electronic instrument, a theremin, at the age of 14

Robert Moog was born in 1934 in New York City. When he was a child, his mother encouraged him to study music, so he learned to play the piano. Meanwhile, he spent a great deal of time with his father as well, with whom he liked to tinker with electronics. By the time Moog had reached his teenage years, these two interests had converged and building simple novelty electronic musical instruments had become a hobby.

In 1949, Moog built his first theremin from the instructions he found in a magazine. He was fascinated with the theatrical and mysterious sounds the instrument, invented by Russian inventor Leon Theremin in the 1920s, could create. The theremin is played by waving your hands in the vicinity of two metal rods, controlling pitch and volume, that are attached to a nondescript wooden cabinet. It is very large and difficult to play, thus its popularity faded rather quickly.

Moog, however, maintained his interest in the theremin throughout his college years. After he received a BS in physics from Queens College and a BS in electrical engineering from Columbia University, Moog pursued a doctoral degree in engineering physics at Cornell University. While he was still a student, Moog founded the R.A. Moog Company as a part-time business to design and build electronic musical instruments. He also published an article for the January, 1961 issue of the magazine ‘Electronics World.’ After the issue was published, Moog sold 1,000 theremin kits out of his three-room apartment.

Eventually Moog began producing instruments of his own design. After toying with the idea of a portable guitar amplifier, Moog turned to the synthesizer. During a convention in 1963, Moog was introduced to the idea of building new circuits that would be capable of producing sound. In 1964 he was invited to exhibit his circuits at the Audio Engineering Society Convention. Shortly afterwards Moog completed his PhD and began to manufacture electronic music synthesizers, and it was not long before synthesizers went from being computers to instruments that could be found in any music store.

Moog designed his first synthesizers in collaboration with the composers Herbert A. Deutsch, and Walter Carlos. Significantly, Moog’s was the first synthesizer to use attack-decay-sustain-release (ADSR) envelopes, set with four different knobs, which control the qualities of a sound’s onset, intensity and fade. Like many of his designs, Moog’s envelope generators became a basic component of later synthesizers.

The sound was monophonic — one note at a time — but that was enough, since studio recording techniques could create whole orchestras from single notes by the late 1960s. Moog’s synthesizer also boasted the voltage-controlled lowpass filter that came to be known as the Moog filter, capable of making a variety of full horn, string and vocal timbres. The filter was patented in 1968.

After the success of Carlos’s album “Switched on Bach,” entirely recorded using Moog synthesizers, Moog’s instruments leapt into commercial popular music. In 1971, the name of his company was changed to Moog Music, Inc., and in 1973 the company became a division of Norlin Music, Inc. Moog served as president of Moog Music until 1977. The Micromoog was the last synthesizer created by Moog to bear his name. After Norlin took over his company, including synthesizer design, Moog spent the rest of his days at the company designing guitar effects and guitar amplifiers.

He left Moog Music in 1977, blaming corporate politics for his departure.

Moog and his family moved from New York State to western North Carolina in 1978. There he founded Big Briar, Inc. for the purpose of designing and building novel electronic music equipment, especially new types of performance control devices. At the International Computer Music Conference in 1982, he introduced the multiple-touch-sensitive keyboard, developed with John Eaton of Indiana University. In addition to responding to the downward motion of a key, the keyboard also sensed the horizontal position of the finger playing it.

From 1984 to 1988, Moog was a full-time consultant and Vice President of New Product Research for Kurzweil Music Systems.

Moog’s awards include the Silver Medal of the Audio Engineering Society; the Trustee’s Award of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences; the Billboard Magazine Trendsetter’s Award; and the SEAMUS award from the Society of Electroacoustic Music in the United States.

Moog died in 2005 at the age of 71, after being diagnosed with a brain tumour four months previously. However, the Moog sound has lived on, with musicians such as Fat Boy Slim choosing to continue to use it even in the digital era.
