The pit bull/American bulldog mix was scheduled to be euthanized at 1:00 p.m. today until word of his plight was posted to Facebook. The “Jackson Madison Rabies Control Stalker,” a woman who uploads images of shelter dogs to her account in the hopes of finding owners to adopt them, posted this message yesterday:

This guy was signed over to RC, not bc he’s mean or bc he tears things up, but because… His owner says he’s gay! He hunched another male dog so his owner threw him away bc he refuses to have a “gay” dog! Even if that weren’t the most assinine thing I’ve ever heard, its still discrimination! Don’t let this gorgeous dog die bc his owner is ignorant of normal dog behavior! He’s in kennel 10L and he WILL be put down tomorrow bc there is no room at the inn!

More than 4,000 people shared the post overnight. Men and women from across the United States volunteered to adopt the dog or pay for him to be moved to a no-kill shelter.

BUT does it makes any sense to think that there is a sexuality other than sex in the nature? We don’t think so. Dogs have always shown interest in having sex. Period.

The making of a homosexual

While some researchers examine what benefits animals may derive from same-sex sexual activities, others are trying to pinpoint straightforward biological causes of the behavior. They find that dosing pregnant animals with certain hormones greatly increases the mothers’ odds of producing homosexual offspring and that among fruit flies, a genetic mutation leads male flies to choose other males (SN: 12/14/96, p. 373).

Animal experiments also reveal that castrating males or giving them drugs to inhibit their production of the enzyme aromatase causes them to fancy members of their own sex, Viveka Mansukhani and her colleagues at Cornell University explain in the December Hormones and Behavior. Testosterone or estradiol treatments make females likely to consort with other females.

In their study, Mansukhani and her coworkers tampered with the sexual orientation of animals that choose one mate for life — a group whose sexual preferences have drawn little attention from other researchers. They gave female zebra finches estradiol during their first 2 weeks of life, then put them in either all-female or coed cages for up to 100 days. Next, they gave them testosterone and observed their mate preferences.

In environments intended to replicate a natural colony, the female birds that grew up in unisex housing were more likely to prefer females than were those in the coed group, they report. As juveniles, the birds may need to see males in order to learn to choose them as mates, speculates coauthor Elizabeth Adkins-Regan.

Because of the great importance of having a partner and the finite supply of males in cages, some captive female zebra finches select a same-sex companion even without any hormone treatments, says Adkins-Regan. In cages, “there’s always a chance that they may get left out — that nobody wants them,” she says. That’s right! The world’s first sex-dolls as we know them were created in Nazi Germany at the request of the SS leader, Heinrich Himmler. Called the “Borghild Field-Hygiene Project,” Himmler came up with the concept to stop the “unnecessary losses” of Nazi soldiers due to STD’s. The Project was considered ”Geheime Reichssache,” translated: ”More secret than top secret.”

The sculptor on the project, Arthur Rink, created three dolls. Typ A: 168 cm bust. Typ B: 176 and Typ C: 182 cm. According to Rink, The SS wanted the breasts “round and full” and SS Dr. Olen Hannussen insisted on “a rose hip form, that would grip well.” As for the face (Yes, they cared about the face, too.) The team agreed it needed a cheeky and naughty look. They asked to borrow the face of an actress of the time, Käthe von Nagy, for the doll, but she declined. Dr. Hannussen suggested an “artificial face of lust”, which he thought would be more appealing to the soldiers. Technician, Franz Tschakert agreed saying, “The doll has only one purpose and she should never become a substitute for the honorable mother at home… When the soldier makes love to Borghild, it has nothing to do with love. Therefore the face of our anthropomorphic sexmachine should be exactly how Weininger described the common wanton’s face.” Going along with the Nordish Nazi vision of beauty, a tall leggy blonde rounded out the form. The first model of Borghild, Typ B, was completed in September 1941.Later, this blonde life-sized woman would inspire Ruth Handler to create the Barbie Doll for girls. This is the tale of Lil’ Drac, an orphaned short-tailed fruit bat who was raised by the folks at Bat World Sanctuary.

His mother was yet another casualty from zoo closures which are occurring across the US. She is a young mother who was stressed from the conditions in which she was kept, combined with the additional trauma of being captured and transferred to a new and unfamiliar environment. Consequently, she abandoned Lil’ Drac after he was born. He was found on the padded floor of the indoor flight enclosure at Bat World Sanctuary, curled up in a little ball.

Bat World Sanctuary is on the front line in ending the abuse and destruction of bats. Each year we rescue thousands of bats that might otherwise die. Bat World is a non-profit, all volunteer organization with 20 rescue centers nationwide.

Why save bats? Because they are among the most beautiful and beneficial animals on earth. They are vital for healthy ecosystems and enhance our lives in many ways. Fruit and nectar bats bring us approximately 450 commercial products and 80 different medicines through seed dispersal and pollination. Up to 98% of all rain-forest regrowth comes from seeds that have been spread by
fruit bats. Insect-eating bats are literal vacuum cleaners of the night skies, eating millions upon millions of harmful bugs. They protect us by eating insects that destroy crops as well as insects that cause human disease.

Yet for all they do, bats are continually killed due to myths, superstition and
fear. The life expectancy of a single bat may exceed 20 years, but slow birth rates limit their population growth. When just 5 bats are needlessly killed, a potential 100 years of animal life is destroyed. Worldwide, almost 60% of bats are either endangered or official candidates for listing, and they desperately need your help.
