25 SnackTiPS to give you energy for the day

From Kimberly Snider 25 Snack suggestion tips that will give you energy throughout the day.

Healthy food

Our energy is integrally connected to the foods we eat. The foods we choose to put in our body can either boost our energy, or drag us down. Here are great energizing foods that will support our general well-being and health. There’s 25, so I’ll get right into it!

1. Apples:

Everyone knows “an apple a day keeps the doctor away,” and it’s true! Apples contain lots of vitamins and minerals, and are also a rich source of flavonoids and polyphenols, both of which are powerful antioxidants. Try eating them in the morning and include in smoothies.
Healthy Snack

2. Bananas:

Bananas are one of the best sources of potassium, which helps maintain normal blood pressure and heart function in the body. Bananas are a convenient snack with a peel that you can throw in your purse or carry-on, that is sure to boost your energy levels during an afternoon lull.
Healthy Food

3. Red Peppers:

Bell peppers are bursting with antioxidant vitamins A and C- also great for skin beauty. Red peppers in particular contain lycopene, which has been linked to cancer prevention. Red peppers are great to snack on if you want that satisfying crunch. Try dipping in salsa for an afternoon snack.
Healthy Foods

4. Hummus:

Hummus is a healthy energy-boosting snack that is sure to satisfy the creamy-salty cravings. It’s a great energy booster when paired with other items on this list, like red peppers, carrots and cucumbers. Try the Raw Chickpea-Free Hummus recipe with zucchini instead of cooked chickpeas, and raw tahini. You’ll still get amino acids and calcium from the raw tahini, but in a lighter, non-starchy form.
Healthy Snack

5. Organic Dark Chocolate:

If you have a sweet tooth, organic dark chocolate is sure to satisfy those cravings, and is better than having dessert snacks that contain refined starches, which will deplete B vitamins that we need for energy. I recommend non-dairy, organic dark chocolate because it contains the highest amount of powerful antioxidants. There is some sugar in it, so limit portion size to 1-2 oz a day.
Healthy Snack

6. Pumpkin seeds:

These seeds are packed with minerals such as magnesium, iron, and calcium, vitamin K and protein. These seeds will be sure to satisfy that crunchy craving when you need a boost. Lighter than nuts, try a quarter of a cup of them in the afternoon a few hours after lunch, especially if you are working out after work or have a long stretch before dinner.
Healthy Snack

7. Carrots:

Carrots are high in fiber, so they are a great crunchy way to take the edge off hunger, while providing some good nutrition. They contain high amounts of Vitamin A, in the form of Beta-Carotene, which is good for the eye sight. Since they are a veggie which combines well with most other foods, they are great to snack on throughout the day.
Healthy Snack

8. Celery:

Celery is a refreshing source of fiber, vitamin C and B-vitamins. It has a diuretic effect, due to its balance of the electrolytes potassium and sodium, which helps to flush out excess fluid from the body. Celery is also believed to have anti-inflammatory properties. It is also great with hummus for a more substantial snack, or try adding it to the Glowing Green Smoothie (see below!)
Healthy Snack

9. Pureed veggie soup:

Making a pureed veggie soup is a great way to get in those veggies on a cold day. Nothing is more comforting than a warm bowl of soup, so try boosting your energy with a bowl of pure veggies! Because the soup is blended, your body can easily absorb the nutrients that become readily available, without wasting energy breaking them down.
Healthy Drink

10. Lemon Water:

It may sounds simple, but sipping water with lemon (cold or hot) is known to provide energy. One of the biggest forms of fatigue is dehydration, so make sure to sip up! Lemon gives an added boost of vitamins and enzymes. Be sure to start your day with a cup of hot water with lemon.
Healthy Snack

11.Oatmeal:

Oats are one of the healthiest carbs you can find. Try some natural oats (oat groats are my favorite) in the morning, at least 25 minutes after you’ve had some fruit or if you are still hungry after having the Glowing Green Smoothie. Sprinkle some cinnamon on top for even more health benefits and more flavor.
Healthy Drink

12. Glowing Green Smoothie:

Try blending up a batch of my signature smoothie when you feel low on energy. It’s packs a huge amount of greens into one drink, with a bit of fruit to sweeten the taste so it is delicious. Loaded with vitamins, enzymes, minerals, amino acids and filling fiber, this is my daily ritual for breakfast and a mid-afternoon snack.
Healthy Snack

13. Watermelon:

Watermelon is a great snack, especially in the summer when it’s in season. It contains lycopene, which as mentioned earlier, has been linked to cancer prevention. Be sure to eat it on an empty stomach to experience its full benefits. As with other non-starchy/non-fatty fruits, it digests quickly and needs to pass out of the stomach so it doesn’t prematurely ferment behind slower-digesting foods.
Healthy Drink

14. Coconut water:

Drinking coconut water is one of the best ways to naturally rehydrate the body. It is packed full of electrolytes and has detoxifying properties. Young coconuts are best, but are not always convenient (!). You can find coconut water in cartons in most health food grocery stores these days.
Healthy Snack

15. Green Salad:

There’s nothing like a nice, green salad to provide an energy burst. Greens are filled with vitamins and minerals, and digest fairly quickly so you’ll feel the energy. Use a light dressing that includes lemon, and this is a perfect way to get some nutrition when feeling low on energy.
Healthy Snack

16. Pineapple:

Pineapple is easy to digest, and contains the enzyme bromelain, which helps aids in digestion and has cleansing properties. Again, be sure to eat on an empty stomach and alone.
Healthy Snack

17. Blueberries:

Blueberries are a delicious, energetic snack. These berries are also known to promote brain function and boost energy, so they are a good thing to eat before a test, or when you need to focus. They are abundant and in season at the moment!
Healthy Snack

18. Avocado:

Filled with fiber and healthy fats and fiber, avocados are one of my daily staples. They are awesome to keep your skin smooth and youthful as well. They are also known to help lower cholesterol. If you don’t like to eat them plain, try adding avocados to salads.
Healthy Snack

19. Raw Granola:

Granola is a great snack when you’re feeling hungry mid-day. Make sure you choose a granola that is not overly processed (a raw variety if you can find it), is preferably gluten-free and does not have a ton of added sugar. Its best to try and make your own, with a base of buckwheat groats.
Healthy Drink

20. Herbal Tea:

This is a nice thing to sip when you don’t want to eat anything late at night or in the mid-morning or afternoon. Make sure to go caffeine free. I suggest red rooibos because it contains lots of antioxidants and has a nice flavor.

21. Dried Figs:

Dried figs are an amazing blood purifier and help dissolve mucus and toxins from our system. Make sure you choose brands that don’t add sugars or additives. Figs have a fairly high amount of sugar, so really limit portion size to only a few. If you have  Candida or another sugar issue, you should avoid dried and regular fruit.
Healthy Snack

22. Strawberries:

A great snack for some fiber, tons of vitamin C, as well as biotin (great for skin/hair/nails) and folic acid. Strawberries contain high levels of antioxidants. Perfect for the summer!
Healthy Snack

23. Quinoa:

Quinoa is a great grain to add to your diet because it is a complete protein, and contains all the essential amino acids. It is one of the most nutritious, filling grains you can choose.
Healthy Snack

24. Cucumber:

Cucumber is known to be a beauty vegetable and full of the beauty mineral silicon. It’s a delicious, hydrating and nutrient-rich snack that tastes great on its own, or dipped in hummus. Try making cucumber salad with raw apple cider vinegar.
Healthy Snack

25. Raw Sauerkraut:

Sauerkraut is a probiotic-rich food. Probiotics help create B vitamins which will be sure to give you the energy you need throughout your day. Try my Probiotic & Enzyme Salad recipe so you can make your own raw sauerkraut for cents a day.

7 Tips to Save $10,000 in 10 Months (at an Entry Level Job)

Derek Johanson saved $10,000 in just ten months (working an entry level job) to make his travel dreams come true.

Derek loves doing things that people think are more dangerous than they actually are: bungee jumping, traveling to Colombia, and talking to strangers. “He’s the real deal. His blog is an experiment in micro testing his philosophy (Live Uncomfortably) and creating his personal lifestyle design” – Jet Set Life.tv

Over the course of 10 months, I was able to save $10,000, working an entry level job, in one of the most expensive cities in the U.S. – Los Angeles. I saved over half of my measly $2,400 monthly income despite the inflated costs of living. Now I’m traveling the world, starting my own businesses, and generally loving life.

I don’t say this to brag (entirely), but to remind everyone that anything is possible if you focus enough energy towards your goals. Here’s I how I did it.

#1: I TRACKED EVERY EXPENSE

I saved my receipts and entered them into a spreadsheet at the end of every day. You’d be amazed how quickly the little untracked expenses add up – coffee, gum, etc. If you record your spending you’ll naturally be a little smarter with it.

Here are what my expenses from January ‘08 looked like (rounded up to the nearest $):

  • Rent: $485
  • Utilities (gas/electric/water): $35
  • Cable: $15
  • Bus/Gas/Transportation: $53
  • Food/Vitamins/Supplements: $265
  • Eating Out: $41
  • House Items/Toiletries: $11
  • Entertainment/Beer/Gifts: $230
  • Education/Business: $70

Total: $1,165

*Note: I didn’t have a cellphone bill because I was still on my parent’s plan.

#2: I OPENED A HIGH YIELD SAVINGS ACCOUNT & PAID MYSELF FIRST

I had a set amount of money deposited directly from my paycheck into a high yield savings account. This way I didn’t have the chance to spend it. A high yield savings account is better than a regular savings account because I accrued interest.

#3: I SAVED ON RENT & UTILITIES

The more people you live with, the cheaper the rent and utilities are going to be. My bill was split between five guys. Consider sharing a room instead of keeping the single. There’s no shame in having a roommate these days, especially with the ridiculous costs of housing.

Privacy was hardly ever an issue for me and my roomies. Whenever my girlfriend and I ‘needed the room’, I just asked and it was ours for a bit.

I don’t, however, recommend sharing a room with a complete stranger. You could get a psycho – I know from experience. Screen potential roommates carefully.

#4: I SAVED ON FOOD

I was eating 5-6 times a day and a lot of healthy foods at each meal. I also bought an expensive protein supplement from Biotest. Yet, I still spent less money on my grocery bills than most people I know. These strategies worked for me:

I bagged my lunch to work.

People hear this all the time but hardly anyone actually does it. My co-workers would routinely eat out and spend $7-8 for their lunch-time meal. I spent just over that for an entire day’s worth of food.

I had a meal plan.

I made a meal plan for the whole week and bought all my food at once. My roommates would often end up at the grocery store every other day because they didn’t want to buy a week’s worth of food at a time. What they failed to see is that they were actually spending more because when they didn’t have food in the house, they’d end up at a fast food joint spending about 1/7 of my weekly bill for one, awful, greasy meal.

I followed the deals.

For healthy, cheap food I went to Trader Joe’s. It kicks the competition’s butt on a lot of products. A dozen cage free eggs is only $2.50!

Go to farmer’s markets on the weekend and stock up. Buy in bulk from Costco. There are cheap places for high quality food in every city. You just have to know where to look.

I ate out sparingly.

Eating out is great. It’s fun and delicious. But it’s also expensive. I usually end up ordering a drink or two so it gets out of control very easily. Instead of going out, I tried cooking nicer meals for my girlfriend at the house. I’m not a good cook (yet) but I tried and I think she appreciated the effort.

#5: I SAVED HUGE ON THE COMMUTE

Try public transportation – it’s not as bad as you think. I rode the bus in LA for ten months with no real incidents to speak of. Unless you count getting made fun of for wearing a tie.

I had no car so I saved on all types of expenses – oil, insurance, and the other hidden costs. When I needed to borrow a car, I did, and I paid my roommates for my share of the gas. But, because I didn’t have my own car, I felt the need to drive places less. Obviously, if I didn’t live with friends, it might have been a problem, but that’s where good roommate decision making comes in to play.

#6: I SAVED ON ENTERTAINMENT

Everyone’s idea of entertainment differs so you might have to get creative. Rent movies and split the $5 rental fee with a friend, or go to discount theaters. They often have movies that are just out of theaters. Avoid the hype and necessity to see a movie as soon as it’s released.

Some of my best nights in LA were spent with a cheap bottle of wine watching classic movies with my friends in a discount theater near my house.

There are times when you need to cut loose. Because I was spending so frugally on other things, I decided to splurge and spend a lot of cash on my friend’s birthday in January. The extra cash for sushi and drinks was well worth the fun.

#7: I READ PERSONAL FINANCE & TRAVEL BLOGS DAILY

Saving was difficult so I had to keep myself motivated. I made sure I read at least one personal finance article (usually something at GetRichSlowly.org) and one travel blog a day (Vagabondish.com anyone?). It helped me stay on track and stay focused on my travel goal.

CONCLUSION

The bottom line is: I didn’t spend my money on stupid things! As long as you follow that rule you’ll be fine. If it does you no good in the future, don’t buy it. Everything is an investment.

Yes, I may have forgone some immediate pleasures and comforts, but now I’m in a position that few people ever will be. I was able take an entire year off to make my dreams come true.

SOME OFTHE READERS:

Matthew

My wife and I live on about $1,300 a month (and that includes $100 invested) as college students.
I only wish that we made more so that we could be saving for more adventures. We take not-frequent-enough backpacking trips to the nearby national park, hit up the discount theater, and only rent movies from RedBox ($1 rentals, as we only keep it a day).

No TV or internet helps keep expenses low. We access the internet on campus for free, and the two shows that we do watch we can see the next day online for free (via the company websites, so it’s legit too).

I’m currently working on ways to increase my income, and those increases will be applied directly to savings. I’ve got more traveling to do!

$41 for eating out? I couldn’t do it ! It’s great that you saved 10k !

Well done, glad to see that you’ve got your priorities right, this will certainly give you a lot more happy memories to look back on that a life time of eating out at lunch time.

Good luck with all your travel plans!

i am currently in a situation extremely similar to the author and I’ve been doing all the things he mentioned: he is completely correct. I’ve been steadily increasing my saving account balance by the steps mentioned above. I’m almost up to the $5,000 mark and spending the fall in Asia. I am 21 years old

Cody

These numbers do not add up. So you made $15/hr and you saved $1000 a month for 10 months correct?

So $1000+$1,165(your expenses) = $2,165 a month you had to bring in, atleast. So you only paid $235 in taxes each month?

According to PayCycle.coms calculator you would only be brining home around $1844 a month after taxes. There calculator may not be to the dollar, but I believe you were taking home much less than the $2200 your calculations say you needed.

How to Use Facebook’s New Timeline Feature (and Hide Your Embarrassing Old Posts)

Facebook finally rolled out its much-anticipated Timeline feature , which brings a snazzy new interface to your profile, not to mention the ability to see every post anyone’s ever made back to their first day on Facebook. Here are the things you need to know about using it.

You can get the Timeline feature right now, but Facebook gives you seven days to adjust the look of your timeline before it goes public. Chances are, you’ll want to tweak a few things before you publish it, so here are the things you’ll want to look at during the next week before it goes live.

How to Browse the Timeline

How to Use Facebook's New Timeline Feature (and Hide Your Embarrassing Old Posts)When you first visit the new interface, you’ll see that it is, in fact, a timeline of all your posts on Facebook, going from newest at the top to oldest at the bottom. By default, it shows all your posts from this month. If you scroll down to the bottom, it will automatically load all of your posts from last month. If you scroll to the bottom of that, it’ll show the “highlights” from the rest of that year.

You’ll also see on the right that you have a sidebar, from which you can jump to specific time periods. Click on a year and it’ll jump to the Highlights view for that year, and expand the sidebar to show every month from that year. Click on a month, and it’ll show you all the posts from that month. You can go to any time period you want, from now all the way back to your first day on Facebook.

How to Use Facebook's New Timeline Feature (and Hide Your Embarrassing Old Posts)Also note that you can jump to a specific time period using the dropdown menus at the top of the page, if you don’t like the sidebar tree. If at any point, you want to see all posts instead of just Facebook’s Highlights, you can choose “All Posts” from the dropdown menu as well.

You might also want to check out the top of your profile, from which you can access a list of your friends, a new view of all your photos (which is actually pretty great), your Likes, and so on. You can also click the tiny “About” link under your profile picture to view your basic info, About Me, work and education, and so on.

How to Add New Events to Your Timeline

While you can add a status or photo to the top of your timeline as normal, the new view also allows you to add blocks on earlier sections of the timeline as well. Say you have a baby picture you want to upload to Facebook. You could go back to the year you were born and add it there, so it appears in chronological order, rather than putting it at the top. To do this, just find the desired spot on the timeline, and hover over the blue line in the middle. Your cursor will turn into a plus sign. You can then click there to add any kind of post you want, be it a new status, photo, place, or other life event (such as a change in relationship status, change in city, or others).

If you want to move a post that already exists—whether you posted it at the top or whether someone else posted an old picture of you—you can move it to a different spot on the timeline as well. Just hover over the post and click the pencil icon that shows up. Hit “Change Date” to move it anywhere you want on your timeline, and it’ll show up there from now on.

How to Change the Look of Your Timeline

You’ll notice that while the interface is very different, Facebook doesn’t work all that differently from the way it used to. At the top of your timeline, you can add a new status update, photo, or place, and you can read all your wall posts just by scrolling down the timeline. The only new features you really need to learn about are those that directly relate to how your timeline looks.

How to Use Facebook's New Timeline Feature (and Hide Your Embarrassing Old Posts)The first thing you’ll want to check out is the cover. Essentially, you have two main photos on the front of your profile—one is your profile picture, which you should already see. The other is a “cover”, a large, high-res photo that will appear behind your profile picture, and you can make this whatever you want. To add one, click the “Add a Cover” button on the right side or your profile. You can choose one of your existing photos or upload one from your hard drive. You can change your cover photo at any time just by hovering over it and clicking the “Change Cover” button that appears.

How to Use Facebook's New Timeline Feature (and Hide Your Embarrassing Old Posts)The other new feature you’ll want to try is starring a post. If there’s a post you or someone else has made that you want to draw more attention to on your timeline, just hover over it and click the star button. This will make it wider, stretching across both columns of your timeline, to make it more noticeable. It’ll also help break up the two-column view and keep the whole thing more interesting, which is nice. To delete a post or hide it from your timeline, click the pencil icon next to the star.

How to Make Old Posts More Private

The one big downside to the Timeline layout is that you can easily see every post you’ve ever made or received on Facebook. All anyone needs to do is go to a certain year on your profile and click the “All Posts” button. For a lot of us, that means posts you made when you were in high school—and I don’t need to tell you how embarrassing it can be to look at some of the things you used to say in high school.

You have a few choices here, and unfortunately neither is very ideal. You can go through your timeline and hide or delete individual posts by clicking the pencil icon, but depending on how long you’ve been on Facebook and how active you are, this could take forever.

Alternatively, if you have any old posts that are public or shared with friends of friends, you can change the privacy of all those posts to “Friends Only” with one click. It won’t hide those posts from your friends, but it will at least keep everyone else on Facebook from being able to browse every post you’ve ever made public. Click the arrow next to the “Home” button in the upper right hand corner of Facebook. Head to Privacy Settings, then scroll down to “Limit the Audience for Past Posts”. Click “Manage Past Post Visibility” and click the “Limit Old Posts” button. This will make all your past posts visible to Friends Only.

Going forward, all posts you make will be subject to the same privacy settings you had before—so if it was set to Public, every post you make after hitting “Limit Old Posts” will still be public. Check out our guide to managing your Facebook privacy for more info.

Again, this feature isn’t perfect, since those posts will still be visible to all your friends, but it’s up to you how deeply you want to cultivate those old posts that everyone now has easy access to. Remember, though, you have 7 days before the Timeline goes public, so if you did want to dig in and go through every year, you could at least spread the work over a few days.

The new timeline feature is much more of a cosmetic update than a functional one, though it can be cool to go back and see all your old posts (as long as they aren’t embarrassing), and being able to add posts anywhere on the timeline is a neat twist. If you haven’t enabled it yet, head toFacebook’s Timeline page to check it out, and let us know what you think of the new design in the comments.

The Dalai Lama’s 18 Tips For Living

dalai lama
At the start of the new millennium the Dalai Lama apparently issued eighteen rules for living. Since word travels slowly in the digital age these have only just reached me. Here they are.

Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk.

When you lose, don’t lose the lesson.

Follow the three Rs:
Respect for self
Respect for others
Responsibility for all your actions.

Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.

Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly.

Don’t let a little dispute injure a great friendship.

When you realize you’ve made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.

Spend some time alone every day.

Open your arms to change, but don’t let go of your values.

Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.

Live a good, honourable life. Then when you get older and think back, you’ll be able to enjoy it a second time.

A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation for your life.

In disagreements with loved ones, deal only with the current situation. Don’t bring up the past.

Share your knowledge. It’s a way to achieve immortality.

Be gentle with the earth.

Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before.

Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other.

Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.
